Do you want to go to a free bhangra dance party in Brooklyn? Um…ya. Thursday we headed to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1 to join many others and dance bhangra!! The night started with Red Baarat, a Bhangra and Brass Funk band which was actually lacking on the bhangra side, and ended with DJ Rekha who is credited with pioneering Bhangra music in North America. She made us very happy creatively blending bhangra, hip-hop and drum beats!!!!
What is bhangra? It is a form of dance and music that originated in the Punjab region which spans the border between Pakistan and India and includes the Punjab province in Pakistan and the Indian states of the Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Delhi. During Thursday’s show, there were dancers on stage; and lucky for me, I was with former bhangra dance team members who taught me a few moves!!! It was awesome – and the view was beautiful 🙂
Happy Orange Suggestion: Dance bhangra!
